He knows the plans He has for us. So often we can switch this phrase to us saying to God that we know the plan God has for us. We want God to use our plans and not His because we think we know what is best. If we wrote our own story, we would never write brokenness or sadness in there...it would be amazing plans and everything working out in life, but God in His mercy and author of our life has His divine plan for us. So often we don’t give God the worship He deserves until He gives us what we want. We hold His worship hostage until we are happy, is this not true? We come to points in our life when we question why God put that certain challenge in our life and we decide to be quiet in our worship. How can God answer unprayed prayers. We have to read this verse and listen, to God. We have to deny ourselves and what we think is the perfect plan and just listen. The Bible says, “Tho you slay me yet I will trust.” Our pain is not going to be wasted. When we stop making time for our comfort and actually listen to God, we will have real comfort and a plan that is greater than we could ever come up with. In this passage God is saying that He “knows” He is not making it up on the go He knows the exact plan and every little detail down to a T. No matter what has happened to us in this past year, God’s plan is not going to hurt us. God also says in this passage, “plans to give you a future.” We might think big wow this year is going to be the exact same as last year. Same boss, same pains and trials. The promise in this text is not fulfilled without Jesus Christ. We need a savior to lift us out of this pit of misery and trial. He is not going to take all these trials away but He will use them to strengthen us and to make us stronger in our faith. It’s like when a father plays hide and seek with a child. The Father can hide so well that the child might give up after an hour and walks away but the Father is still there even tho the child cannot see Him. So often this is what we do to God. We seek Him and then give up when He is not answering. God is still there as our Father even though we cannot see Him. But sometimes the father will stick out His foot and the joy the child has when he finds him is so great even the father smiles. This is like a child of God or a sinner when we find God. He lets us have that joy. It’s only when we surrender ourselves that we can come to this amazing consolation of God’s greatness. We must trust God’s plan for us and stop holding our worship for our heavenly Father. Author Joni M. is a student in Mr. Mingerink's journalism class at Covenant Christian HS in Grand Rapids, MI. This year the Student Council held a purple out game for the volleyball teams to raise awareness for cancer.
Students and parents helped out the cause by purchasing t-shirts, purple ribbons devoted to those who are affected by cancer, and a volleyball serving competition. All costs made were given to the VanAndel Institute. This event had a great outcome. The seats were filled with fans that came to support cancer and the volleyball teams. The night was followed by the three volleyball teams playing tough competition against our rivals, West Michigan Christian. The Freshman team came out with a win, and the JV and Varsity teams took a hard loss. Being apart of the varsity volleyball team and playing this purple out game was such a fun experience. The gym was loud as fans were cheering on their teams, which created an exciting atmosphere. Although we lost, it was still a great experience knowing that we were playing for those affected by cancer. The Student Council puts a lot of time and work into this event, and we would like to thank them for their hard work. This is such an important cause, that we sometimes forget. This event can really open our eyes to help those who are suffering from illnesses. God gives us strength in our time of sickness. When we are overwhelmed with health problems, God is our source of help and encouragement. Isaiah 41:10 says, “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” This verse clearly shows us to look to God when we are facing difficulties, and He will send us help. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Don’t worry. The world today is full of worries. The secular society that we live in even recognizes this and the need to withdraw ourselves from worry whenever possible --- They recognize it in their culture and films - why do you think Disney's song "Hakuna Matata" on the Lion King, meaning "no worries," has struck and resonated with so many people in the world? They desire a life without worries too, albeit their outlets for finding that desired stress-free life aren't always proper and right. However, as Christians, we have the true “no worries” policy. We have Jesus Christ. No worries is peace. Peace is the absence of fear, doubt, fretting, and anxiety. Where there is peace, there is joy. Where there is no peace, joy is not found. In Paul’s epistle to the Philippians, he makes a point to instruct them on where that peace is to be found: “And the peace of God...shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” It’s all because of Christ Jesus! He is the centerpiece around which that peace is centered and structured. This instruction of Paul on peace comes as a result of something stated earlier in the passage. What instrument does God use to transmit to us the peace earned in Christ: “in everything by prayer and supplication”. This is how that peace is made known to us. We are to bring our thoughts, concerns, worries, and stresses to the throne of the almighty God. There is surety...the peace of God SHALL keep your hearts and minds. That is a promise. God’s promises are sure and unshakeable and, therefore, our peace - when resting in Christ - is unshakeable for we know that “neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39). The world tries to find their peace in worldly securities: money, fame, insurance, retirement accounts, reputation, and the list goes on. Each one of these, while not necessarily wrong of themselves, are a false hope and a temporary, unlasting peace. Our hope and peace lasts in the Rock, the immovable Rock of Ages! The knowledge of this is a great comfort for us as we embark on this new year. We will have tough times this year. There will be moments when we feel uncertain, shaken, and stressed. Difficult decisions will face us where we don’t feel “at peace”. Whether those decisions revolve around future life circumstances such as careers, college, family situations, etc. or whether they involve more current troubles such as which classes to take during 2nd semester, can I handle the workload of my classes, how hard do I push myself, social pressures, etc., we know that God is our security and in that security there is peace for our soul, like a pleasant river, that, when we abide there, He will help in paving a path for us and restore rest for our weary souls: “When peace like a river, attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say it is well, it is well, with my soul...though Satan should buffet, though trials should come, let this blest assurance control, that Christ has regarded my helpless estate, and hath shed His own blood for my soul...my sin, oh, the bliss of this glorious thought, my sin, not in part but the whole, is nailed to the cross, and I bear it no more, praise the Lord, praise the Lord, o my soul!” Author Mr. Ethan Mingerink is a teacher at Covenant Christian HS in Grand Rapids, MI. As far back as I can remember the Lubbers family has always been big snowmobile drivers, but strictly Arctic Cat.
When I was 5 years old my Dad got me started riding on a little kitty cat. From the first time I hit the throttle I was hooked. I loved it. When I got a little older, I started driving my Uncle Brad’s enticer. I felt a little bit like Larry Enticer if you know who that is. I have had a few other sleds in between there. The greatest thing about snowmobiling is just driving around and enjoying the beautiful snow on the trees and the ground. Whether we go up north or just around the house, we always have a good time. One of our favorite drives is going to Countryside Inn at Wilson and Adams. It's a good little ride for dinner at night time. The moms always meet us there because they complain too much about the cold. When we go up north one of my favorite rides is from Kalkaska up to the Bridge and staying in a hotel, and then we do it all over again the next day. When we go over the Bridge, we will pack everything in our snowmobiles and do some cross country riding. We stay at a different hotel every night, and it’s a riot. At night, we all go into one room and plan out our trip for the next day. I am so glad that our family is as close as we are. Family means so much to me. We always have each others backs, and can always count on having fun. Author Carly L. is a student in Mr. Mingerink's journalism class at Covenant Christian HS in Grand Rapids, MI. Young people have a very important place in the community especially in our church.
Young people, although they may think they have busy lives, they have a lot of free time to do things for other people. You can always make time to make a meal of some baked goods for an elderly saint or for a mother who just had a baby. Even if you don’t make a meal, it is always beneficial to visit with the elderly saints in your church. They have lived a lot of life and have a lot to teach the younger generations. This is very important to them. First of all, the Bible says in III John 4, “I have no greater joy than to see that my children walk in truth.” That is what the elderly saints want to see and that is an easy way to bring great joy to them. Also, they have a lot of things to say to the young people because they know that they are the future leaders in the church. Lots of times the elderly in the church are the people that built or started the church so it’s really important to them that it stays firm in the truth so they want the younger generation to be strong in faith. But young people also have an important role in society as a whole. When young people do something different it makes a big impact on people watching. It's expected that adults act good and mature but when you see a teenager being mature that really makes people realize that there's something different about us. We can witness to our worldly coworkers but we can also witness to our family and friends. When we come home from school complaining about a teacher or class our younger siblings see that and they start to think that complaining is okay. We need to have a good attitude toward school and set a good example for our younger siblings. Also, with our friends, if our friends see or hear that we are doing personal devotions or reading the Standard Bearer they will be more motivated to do those things themselves.
